Orange light bathes the car, between beams, through the Dig, until rushed into immediate darkness. The gradual glow and instant darkness of approaching signs flash. Shimmering ahead, heaving and teeming is the highway. White points in far distance behind are a reminder that human contact is present and visible, but extremely distant. Squinting into the darkness, waiting an eternity until beyond the dull orange glow is the almost invisible halo of the lights of the EL. Two small points of light appear and illuminate the tracks below. Approaching is, Eastbound to Frankford, B stops only. Stainless steel, glass and blue trim barrel out from under the ground into the sky, rushing through sparkling blue and white tiled stations, passing through looping overpasses, over quiet sleeping streets, orange points of light weave together the structure of the city.
